CALIFORNIA LAUNCHES DISABILITY RESOURCE WEBSITE
SACRAMENTO - The California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) today launched a new Web site, http://www.disabilityaccessinfo.ca.gov/, to serve as a one-stop resource for locating information on disability law and access issues. The launch coincides with the 15th anniversary of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that will be celebrated this July.
"The new Web site exemplifies the Schwarzenegger Administration's commitment to using technology to improve service delivery and placing the tools and information in the hands of businesses and private citizens to create an even more accessible California for persons with disabilities," said Catherine Campisi, director of DOR.
This first-of-its-kind Web site combines information on state and federal laws, regulations and enforcement, guidance in providing access accommodations and resources for meeting disability access laws. Since disability laws can differ between the private and public sectors, the Web site was designed to meet the needs of both audiences, as well as its primary target of Californians with disabilities.
"Although well known, the federal ADA is not the sole law governing civil rights for persons with disabilities," said Campisi. "Several California laws exist that go beyond the ADA and impact employment, fair housing and other important aspects of California living. Our new Web site will demystify the differences and help visitors locate the information and assistance they need."
The Web site provides a user-friendly format for businesses and individuals unclear on which law or government agency to contact for guidance on disability issues. The site also contains links to vital resources, such as sign language interpreters or Braille document producers.
The Web site was developed as part of an interagency taskforce, including the Department of General Services, Department of Fair Employment and Housing, DOR, State Architect and State Personnel Board. For more information, log on to http://www.disabilityaccessinfo.ca.gov/.
