DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION YEAR 2000 READINESS STATEMENT

We are prepared

The Department of Rehabilitation (DR) began preparing for the Year 2000 or Y2K in 1994. At this time, the Department has reviewed and updated all its systems and meets the State of California - Department of Information Technology guidelines.

Where to get Information on the Department if there is a problem

Currently, we do not foresee a problem with our internal systems, however, we rely on utilities and other such necessities to conduct business and provide services. Should there be a temporary disruption of service due to a Y2K problem, the following places will have updated information on the how to access our services.

  1. Information will be posted on the door of your local DR office
  2. Call 1-800-265-0815 Voice or 1-800-598-3273 after December 1, 1999, for the latest update on our preparations for Y2K and information on services if an office is closed.
  3. A mailer may be sent if a problem is going to be long-term
  4. Our Website www.rehab.cahwnet.gov will also have the latest information on Y2K and status of services.

What is Y2K?

The Year 2000, or Y2K, problem is caused by a "shortcut" used in many computers and microchips. Years ago, to conserve memory space, programmers used two numbers to record the year -- for example, 72 would mean 1972. Unfortunately, computers and microchips that still use a two-number year may, on January 1, 2000, recognize 00 not as the Year 2000 but as the Year 1900. This could cause them to either shut down or generate incorrect data in our electronic information-dependent society, which could be a big problem.

The Department of Rehabilitation and the State of California are committed to minimizing the impact of the Year 2000 problem on its citizens and users of Department services. At the same time, the Department does not promise or warrant that its systems or equipment will be Year 2000 "compliant" or free from problems related to "Year 2000."
